While all service initiatives are to continue, Rotary Club of Cochin City has started a Palliative care unit for Cancer and other terminally ill patients in and around Cochin with the support of Government Medical College Kochi. Palliative care is an area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients. Unlike hospice care, palliative medicine is appropriate for patients in all disease stages, including those undergoing treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic diseases. This is a multidisciplinary approach that allows the palliative care team to address physical, emotional, spiritual and social concerns that arise with advanced illness. A relatively recent development is the palliative-care team, a dedicated health care team that is entirely geared toward palliative treatment. The plan is to have a van with paramedical staff to travel the lengths of the district offering palliative care to needy patients. The budgeted cost for this project is Rs. 20 lacs.
